Shelter: A New Musical

"Shelter" is a contemporary musical with Book and Lyrics by Brittany Bullen and Music by Brittany Bullen and Newell Bullen, both Salt Lake residents. All proceeds from this event will benefit the homeless in Salt Lake City via several related organizations. The current production is directed by Brighton Sloan and will be staged at the Murray Theatre from May 20-28th.

As our story begins, we see a woman named Jeanine in her first day of work as a counselor in a women's homeless shelter. The people she meets there and the struggles she faces help her to begin to overcome her troubled past. Filled with colorful characters, tears, laughs and romance, this musical has a little something for everyone. Audiences will learn what it means to be part of the solution, and as one character sings, "If it changes nothing else, maybe it will change your heart." The show contains some situationally-appropriate drug and prostitution references, but no foul language, and should be appropriate for teenagers.

This is the first production of Shelter, which was originally written as a solution to the problem of the lack of musicals with mostly female roles. As the show has evolved, a larger mission became clear: to use the landscape of musical theatre to create positive change for those who are less fortunate. This workshop production was first seen at a reading in March by industry professionals as well as experts on homelessness and has since undergone a careful revision to ensure that the story was told sensitively and accurately. Although there were many positive responses to the show, the most overwhelming comment we received was "I've been singing your songs in my head ever since!"

When you buy your ticket, be sure to select one of the following charities so we know where to send your money: Road Home, Fourth Street Clinic, YWCA, Rescue Mission, South Valley Sanctuary, Catholic Community Services, Salt Lake City Mission, Family Promise, Safe Harbor Women's Shelter, Volunteers of America?s Center for Women and Children.
